To celebrate the Beaver Valley Amateur Radio Association's 90th anniversary, in 2013 we explored our club's history and published our findings in the club's monthly newsletter. In addition, each decade is in the process of being published on this page for ease of reference.

THE 1960s

HOW IT STARTS:

"The decade of the 1960s continued the significant activity within the BVARA. During this decade, increasing evidence of
club activities, equipment, and the
identification of individuals from the clubs
becomes available....

The 'Sixties' best describes the
complex of interrelated cultural and political trends that occurred across the globe. In particular, this was the era of counterculture and social revolution near the end of the decade and also the era of irresponsible excess and flamboyance."

HOW IT STARTS:

"The decade of the 1950s saw significant activity within the BVARA. War surplus equipment as well as significant 'boat anchor' equipment found their way
into many stations of BVARA members.

During this decade, increasing evidence of
club activities, equipment, and the
identification of individuals from the clubs
becomes available. We continue our high-level review of the culture, the current
events at that time, both locally and
globally, and some of the activities of the BVARA."

THE 1940s

HOW IT STARTS:

"When the 1940s began, war had already broken out in Europe. Four days after the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7, 1941, all U.S. ham operations ceased.
World War II would change everything.

During this decade, evidence of club activities, equipment, and the identification of individuals from the clubs begins to surface.  We continue our high-level review of the culture, the current events at that time, both locally and globally, and some of the obstacles those hams faced during and after the war years."

THE 1930s

HOW IT STARTS:

"In 1931 another group of radio amateurs in Beaver County joined together and founded the Beaver Falls Amateur Radio Club.

Now there were two clubs within the area that shared their hobby for the hams within Beaver County. The world was changing and the technology for radio communication was rapidly undergoing many changes as well. During this decade, evidence of club activities, equipment, and the identification of individuals from the clubs begins to surface."

MARCH 2013:
THE 1920s

HOW IT STARTS:

"In the early twenties, 1922 or 1923, a group of radio amateurs banded together and founded the Beaver Valley Amateur Radio Club.

In those days, very little technical knowledge was available so these Beaver County amateurs gathered principally to exchange ideas and opinions concerning amateur radio. In fact, very little is known about those three radio pioneers. We do know about the culture, the current events at that time, both locally and globally, and some of the obstacles those inquisitive individuals faced with radio technology. From a practical point of view, there were still many homes without electricity."
